There are three attributes to consider before promoting someone to leadership for the first time: a history of strong performance, the ability to cope with stress and political savviness. Through a vignette, the authors present two perspectives related to emerging leaders. The first perspective is that of existing leadership and addresses the three attributes of a successful leader. The second perspective is that of an emerging and aspiring leader who recently moved into leadership, and the actions he took to develop in his new role. These two perspectives are used to show how the qualities that set one person apart from their peers can influence a transition to leadership.
